Coaching – what is it?

Definition

AC define coaching as ‘a facilitated, dialogic and reflective learning process that aims to grow the individual’s … awareness, responsibility and choice … in order to identify the essence of the problem and implement change.’

My Approach

For me, coaching is about helping the client both recognise and realise their potential. Recognise, because there may first be a need to generate and clarify an empowering vision of who they can be and where they can go. Realise, because (as in the video) there may be obstacles to overcome on the journey and benefit to be had from having someone supportive journey with you.

Coaching can be about general ‘life’ issues or related to your work, career or business. Sometimes the two are inter-related (e.g. for an entrepreneur or other person for whom their work may be central to their identity or place in the world)
